The Strategy team at REI is responsible for developing the co-op’s long-term vision, key enterprise objectives and goals, transformation strategy and plan. The DVP, Strategy leads this team and is high in visibility and impact, serving as the Chief of Staff to REI’s Executive Leadership Team, working closely with senior leaders and teams across the entire organization to set and achieve our goals, and leading the strategic content and management of our Board of Directors. The DVP, Strategy contributes to REI’s success by leading the strategy development required to create and manage our long-term, annual, and quarterly integrated plans to achieve our vision. This role oversees our enterprise strategy team, which is responsible for market (customer & competitive) insights, driving forward-looking thought leadership and analysis to continually identify new growth horizons and opportunities, developing our enterprise long-term and annual strategic plans, partnering with leaders to develop key strategies, and leading enterprise strategic business and corporate development.

Drives clarity, focus and alignment to reorient key parts of the organization from HQ to the field on these KPIs to achieve our 3-year strategic plan objectives and 2030 vision.
  • Champions and drives the embedding of our key impact objectives (Racial Equity, Diversity & Inclusion and Climate) across our long-term strategy, priorities, and key initiatives.
  • Partners with executive leaders to develop and accelerate key enterprise strategic priorities as outlined in our 3-year strategic transformation plan.
  • Serves on REI’s Executive Leadership Team, acting as the Chief of Staff.
  • Leads the strategic content development and processes to manage our quarterly Board of Directors meetings and annual strategic planning retreats.
  • Runs enterprise strategic business & corporate development including evaluating opportunities to accelerate our transformation such as white papers/business cases on emerging/next horizon opportunities and business models, M&A, and strategic partnerships.
  • Serves as the thought-leader across the co-op for macro, consumer, and market insights, synthesizing trends and identifying opportunities and risks that influence our current and future initiatives and strategic positioning. Supports deep dives on financial, customer, and market analyses across our strategic priorities.
  • Develops communication of enterprise strategy updates, plans and priorities to the Senior Team, Leadership Forum, and All REI.
  • Partners closely with the Customer Insights & Analytics and FP&A teams to set long-term, 3-year, annual, and quarterly enterprise goals/targets/KPIs and key strategic guardrails for leaders and empowered teams.
  • Works closely with the Strategic Transformation Management Office (STMO), which is responsible for driving clarity, discipline and accountability on objectives, outcomes, initiatives and associated milestones and critical paths/roadmaps required to manage and deliver on our 3-year strategic, annual, and quarterly plans.
  • Leads and fosters team culture and talent development of the strategy team.

Professional Qualifications and Experience

  • 15+ years of progressive leadership experience, with increasing levels of responsibility, ideally within the retail, consumer, or technology sectors
  • Strategic, big picture, quick thinker and intellectually curious problem solver with proven experience in establishing thought leadership, vision and goals; developing strategic and annual plans
  • Demonstrated ability to partner and collaborate across organizations to create & manage against outcomes.
  • Ability to lead adaptively through complex and ambiguous problems and situations
  • Ability to act as a change agent. Drive transformational change, sponsor change initiatives, and enable others to innovate. Foster a continuous improvement mindset.

  • BS or BA, preferably in a related field (business, economics, etc.). MBA strongly preferred.
