Job Summary

The Decision Science Strategist (Manager) is responsible for leveraging data and advanced analytical capabilities to drive business results by deeply understanding data, business operations and asking relevant business questions that connect the dots between business challenges and how advanced analytics and machine learning methodologies can add value. Reporting directly to the Director of Decision Science and Analytics, this person will work cross-functionally across the organization with business leaders in Merchandising, Planning and Allocation, Omni Channel operations and Marketing, helping discover opportunities in the business that can be improved by using predictive and prescriptive analytical models. This role will collaborate with a variety of business units to develop use cases that deliver value through applied analytics and work with Data Scientists and business managers to scope, build and implement these analytical capabilities as well as measure their business impact

Decision Science Strategic Consulting- Identify opportunities in the business that can be solved by leveraging predictive and prescriptive analytics to drive business value, particularly in the area of retail merchandising, planning and allocation as well as consumer marketing and personalization. Ask relevant business questions by synthesizing complex related data and relate analytical techniques to business problems

Leadership and mentoring-Lead a small team (2-3) of Data Scientists, providing mentoring and quality control of their work as well as growing the team professionally. Ensuring Machine learning models developed by the team solves the business challenge and delivers the promised business benefit

Lead cross-functional projects using advanced data modeling and analysis techniques to discover insights that will guide strategic decisions and uncover optimization opportunities

Machine learning Analytical use case building and measurement-Building use cases for new analytics product concepts, back-testing use case assumptions with post-deployment data, quantifying and measuring the value of predictive and prescriptive models in collaboration with business partners

Model Testing and Optimization – Assist in designing statistically valid tests of machine learning models and analytical initiatives and provide actionable reads of those tests.

Predictive and Prescriptive Model Implementation and Performance Monitoring - Ensure models are implemented by working with IT and business to remove roadblocks. Ensure models are performing as designed by constantly monitoring performance results and communicating results with business partners to validate model is doing what business expects

Responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities in the business that can be solved by leveraging predictive and prescriptive analytics to drive business value, particularly in the area of retail merchandising, planning and allocation as well as consumer marketing and personalization
  • Work closely with key business partners to understand critical, complex, data-driven business and operations challenges, and then design approaches, prototype new technology, and productionize promising capabilities
  • Closely collaborate with internal business partners (Merchandising, Planning and Allocation, Pricing, Marketing and IT) and outside vendors to recommend analytic approaches to ensure insights are leading to action and driving measurable business impact.
  • Work closely with key business partners to understand critical, complex, data-driven business and operations challenges, and then design approaches, prototype new technology, and productionize promising capabilities Research, design, and implement data models and innovative algorithms to analyze diverse sources of data to realize actionable results
  • Lead and mentor a small team of Data Scientists to achieve project goals and complete major deliverables
  • Apply rigorous data science methods and understanding of levers that can drive growth and profitability across our product and services offerings
  • Manage complex data analyzing it end-to-end, and creating and delivering compelling presentations to other stakeholders
  • Build use cases for new analytical product concepts and ensuring it fits into the broader business strategy and technological integrations
  • Aid in the dissemination of analytical best practices throughout the organization
  • On occasion, technically participate(hands-on) in analytical projects

Education:

  • MS in Computer Science, MIS, Statistics, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Business with strong analytics focus or any related field

Experience:

  • 7+ years of industry experience in building and/or implementing predictive and prescriptive analytics solutions that drive business revenue in business units including but not limited to merchandise planning, allocation, pricing and promotional, marketing and personalization.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Data Analyst, Business Analyst or Data Scientists
  • Minimum 3 years of consulting type role in retail analytical applications
  • Solid understanding of retail, e-commerce, merchandizing, supply chain, marketing, or related domain
  • Demonstrated track record with leading both technical and non-technical project teams to develop highly scalable commercial or industrial strength data science applications that add measurable business benefits
  • Adaptable to changing business needs, priorities and responsibilities in a fast-paced environment and ability to effectively prioritize team workload
  • Familiarity with machine learning and mathematical optimization methods such as Decision Trees, Random Forests, Neural Network, NLP, Time Series Analysis, Econometrics, Linear and non-linear programming, Network simulation and optimization, etc. and how they are used to drive business value in a retail setting
  • Strong experience with analytical tools in various combinations: SQL, Python, R, Alteryx, Tableau, MicroStrategy
  • Very strong analytical mindset and ability to use data and logic to make compelling business cases. Blend of strategic, tactical, creative and analytical reasoning

  • Broad understanding of big data (structured or unstructured), cloud computing and applications
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and complexity

Preferred

  • Qualification/Traits
    • Demonstrated understanding of financial levers related to merchandising, planning and allocation, marketing, pricing & promotions
    • Familiarity with big data technology such as Spark, Hadoop Hive, Scala, Kafka, Python and R
    • Extreme curiosity and ability to challenge the “status quo” on business operations
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Structured and conceptual thinker that can connect data points and insights to business processes
  • Knowledge of current retail landscape, trends associated, business models that are influencing retail market
  • Familiarity with Google Cloud environment and its capabilities in machine learning and artificial intelligence
