Away is a global lifestyle brand with a mission to transform travel through products and content that inspire people to get away more. In support of our mission, we are seeking a VP, Creative, to join our team.

Want to help us transform the travel experience? This role will directly oversee the brand, digital and retail creative output across the company—supporting the evolution of Away from product driven direct to consumer startup to omni commerce, globally recognized travel brand.

The ideal candidate has in house experience leading creative teams in a retail organization. The candidate should be a self-motivated, collaborative and “in the work” leader, with an exceptional understanding of the cultural and travel landscape. This individual must be deeply invested in the growth and development of their team, creating an environment of fostering creativity and talent in their organization.  This must have experience demonstrating success at working across teams.  They will be able to strike the balance between developing the brand and driving emotional and innovative creative work.

They keep the Away customer and community at the core while articulating the brand’s unique identity. They uphold brand standards and ensure consistency across customer touchpoints. The ideal candidate will have had experience in retail, digital, direct to consumer and traditional media. This individual will deliver the global Away message through owned and earned channels.  This individual will report to the Chief Marketing Officer based in our New York City office.

The VP, Creative has a hands-on leadership style and leads an in-house team to execute creative across channels to support business and brand initiatives. They are able to artfully balance business and merchandising demands with the needs of the consumer to build brand awareness and drive engagement. This person cultivates a creative environment who thinks big while being hands on in executing multiple deliverables within an agile and fast-paced working environment. This person understands both retail and digital experience and can develop compelling stories for our consumers that drive customer engagement.

What you’ll do:

  • Strategically push the creative integrity of all campaigns and deliverables to cement Away as a global brand leader, while meeting the business objectives.
  • Leverage cultural and consumer insights to ensure all creative work is strategy-led and positions Away as a thought leader.
  • Ensure consistency in brand identity across channels, in partnership with editorial, design and marketing teams.
  • Evolve, own, and iterate on the brand visual identity and voice for multi-channel campaigns that touch all areas of the customer experience—including social, retail, web, experiential, and more.
  • Deliver the brand message through innovative creative to inspire travel, drive purchase and create community engagement.
  • Lead a growing team of creative directors, art directors, copywriters, and designers to create first-in-class creative for the Away brand.
  • Partner with your creative team leads (production, creative studio, creative services, creative resourcing) to identify the right frameworks needed to ensure the team has the time, tools, and process to facilitate impactful work.
  • Partner closely with Marketing, Editorial Growth, Design, Digital Merchandising and other key stakeholders throughout the business to ensure creative output is highly effective while maintaining brand standards and innovation.
  • In collaboration with Talent Acquisition, attract and recruit a team of top-tier creative talent across art direction, copy, and graphic design—continuously monitoring bandwidth and expertise needs.
  • Operate at a highly visible and strategic level while managing a growing team of creatives—ensuring a high standard of execution while never missing an opportunity to mentor and motivate.

Who you are:

  • Minimum 15 years experience that includes in-house creative direction, retail and digital
  • You have a compelling portfolio of distinctive work that elevates a brand’s creative experience
  • A creative visionary—people are inspired by and excited to work with you
  • Management experience and track record of growing and supporting teams.
  • You operate at an executive level with a track record of excellent mentorship and management
  • Extensive knowledge of channel best practices—you never push creative work forward at the expense of business goals.
  • Experience in and comfortable working cross-functionally—especially with Brand and Growth teams
  • Strong organizational skills, keen eye for detail, and ability to manage multiple projects at once
  • You thrive in a fast-paced environment where deadlines, priorities, and initiatives change frequently
  • Exceptional presentation skills with the ability to clearly and articulately explain your rationale and evoke excitement with your recommendations
  • Experience leading photo and video production
  • Expert in the Adobe Suite, G-Suite, Keynote, and any other relevant tools needed
  • Team player with a "no task is too small" attitude
  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
  • Passionate about transforming travel (but that’s a given!)
