As Vice President of Product Design, you will lead a team responsible for inspiring design across all surfaces of (Web, Mobile, App and Extension), developing and creating a cohesive, top-quality experience that aligns with how our members engage with our platform end-to-end.  This key leadership position is responsible for developing an overall strategy for our ever-evolving site, leveraging the current team’s talents and wisdom and up-leveling and motivating them to think differently. The VP of Product Design plays an integral role in coordinating across the product management, engineering, marketing, and GTM teams to ensure the most seamless experience for our users, regardless of how or what features or products engage with on our platform. This leader must develop a deep understanding of our member and merchant needs, craft and implement initiatives to reinforce and improve upon the design of Rakuten Rewards, and ensure all deliverables are consistent with best practices and company needs.  We’re looking for a self-motivated design leader with rich UX/UI experience in developing strategies for simple visual solutions for complex problems.


  • Direct the development, testing and evaluation of results for storyboards, samples, prototypes and templates for proposed changes
  • Partners and manages relationships with senior leadership, marketing, product management and engineering to communicate results, ensure compliance with desired user experience and approve specifications and requirements for the look, feel and functionality of products.
  • Lead and mentor, a distributed team with various levels of experience, in building on Rakuten’s unique platform design, ensuring short-term tactical activities and long-term strategic efforts align with Rakuten Rewards stated objectives.
  • Lead design initiatives that best serve our members and develop messaging to succinctly describe the unique value of Rakuten plus individual features.
  • Interact with design stakeholders and drive decisions with a process of collecting and addressing feedback.
  • Coordinate with other teams that build the Rakuten Rewards aesthetic as a creative collaborator to ensure a consistent, complementary experience across all of our member-facing assets.
  • Market intelligence: Be an expert on delighting customers through design.


  • Demonstrated, proven leadership experience on stunning, interactive, user-centered products and solutions
  • Expert level fluency in brand, visual and user experience/product design
  • Fluency with technical aspects of design across mobile and desktop web, iOS and Android platforms
  • Exceptional design sense and design strategy experience, with the ability to provide clear, critical design reviews to project teams
  • Ability to think technically and collaborate with developers and technologists to determine the benefits, possibilities and constraints of common coding languages, network resources, and user interfaces
  • Experience developing and rolling out design systems critical.
  • Ability to lead complex, multi-faceted projects while exhibiting financial responsibility and adhering to demanding project schedules
  • Experience with high-level marketing and product strategy


  • Minimum 8-10 years' experience in a variety of interactive design formats & methodologies— including mobile/tablet apps, websites and immersive experiences
  • A professional degree in human-computer interaction, graphic design, interaction design, computer science, or communications. 
  • Portfolio demonstrating sound product-thinking through navigation, user flows, interaction design and information architecture
  • Portfolio demonstrating tasteful use of typography, color, imagery, grid systems, well-crafted animation/transitions
  • Portfolio showcasing a proven track record in creating client focused UX that solves complex design problems providing impact to clients and businesses
  • Actual coding experience, is a plus
