This week, Women in Retail Leadership Circle (WIRLC) held five Virtual Lounge sessions on Facebook Live with industry experts to learn more about how organizations and leaders are evolving their strategies and operations in light of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Furthermore, the Virtual Lounge event, which was originally scheduled to take place at Shoptalk but was moved online when that industry event was postponed till September, was designed to encourage the WIRLC community to stay connected during this time of social distancing and self-isolation. During one of the sessions, WIRLC Co-Founder Melissa Campanelli chatted with Lauri Kien Kotcher, CEO of Hello Products, a fast-growing oral care brand, to learn about how her and her team are adjusting to today’s evolving business environment.
For example, Campanelli asked Kien Kotcher how she has been keeping her team motivated in the current climate.
“[Our team] has always been really agile, really nimble,” Kien Kotcher said. “So I think that right now our team is just trying to stay very focused on all the changes we need to deal with every single day, as well as having a little bit of humor.” Kien Kotcher explained that the Hello Products team stays connected by sharing funny articles they find online as well as by having a group call twice a week on Zoom.
“We’re just trying to find ways in the situation that we can help make every day just a little bit better,” Kien Kotcher added.
Furthermore, Campanelli asked Kien Kotcher if she had any experience or tips for managing employees who are working from home. Kien Kotcher explained that her team has been doing a lot of checking in with each other, but not every day with every team member because that can be overwhelming.
“What we’ve suggested is just getting into a routine, getting yourself started on a schedule,” Kien Kotcher said. “Plan to start the same time every day, plan to take breaks, plan to take lunch.”
Kien Kotcher said that the biggest challenge her remote employees are facing right now is dealing with children who are off from school. “Something no one really could have planned for was having young kids at home and having to home school them,” she said. “I think we’re all realizing how amazing teachers really are and how hard that job actually is.”
