During a session at Shoptalk earlier this year in Las Vegas, Wayfair Chief Technology Officer Fiona Tan was asked to identify the biggest opportunities she sees for technology in retail. Her response? Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and large language model (LLM) capabilities.

Tan shared her excitement over LLM multimodal capabilities and personalization enablement with Sonia Lapinsky, managing director of retail at AlixPartners. She detailed one way Wayfair is utilizing GenAI through Muse, its new inspiration engine that helps shoppers more intuitively search and discover products.

“Now with generative capabilities … you can really get a lot closer to that one-on-one personalization,” noted Tan. “And then the ability to understand the context, all of those [things] have been supercharged by generative AI, LLM capabilities.”
