Women are pivotal to technological innovation and entrepreneurial growth, however, not many are pursuing careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields. Currently, nearly 60 percent of the American workforce is women. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of women are working in the technology field. Lucidworks recently released an infographic that offers a snapshot of the gender gap and how it compares to the rest of the workforce. The most interesting fact that stood out to me is that while only 7 percent of companies are founded by women, female-led companies produce an average of 12 percent higher revenues with 33 percent less capital. Below are some more findings from Lucidworks’ research:

  • Women occupy less than 20 percent of technical positions at Apple, Google, LinkedIn, Facebook, Yahoo and Twitter.
  • Just 6 of the top 100 tech companies’ chief executives are women.
  • Seventy-four percent of high school girls are interested in STEM subjects in school, but only 20 percent of girls pursue STEM-related degrees in college.
