In today’s volatile workplace, developing a robust, high-performance team is vital for success. Erin Wendte, chief commercial officer of Zumiez, highlights four keys for doing this effectively: hiring culture-aligned individuals, integrating development into daily work, transitioning from mentorship to advocacy, and personalizing employee recognition.

“I think you can teach hard skillsets, but getting someone who shares the mindset and values of the organization is really key,” emphasized Wendte at the Women in Retail On the Road: Seattle event last fall.

Also featured on that same session was Costco Chief Diversity Officer Alison Francis, who echoed the importance of cultural alignment. “Making sure people are communicated in a way that feels meaningful to them” is essential, Francis said. For example, she detailed Costco’s innovative “Costco Connects” initiative, which empowers employees by giving them a voice. The program has fostered community connections, even revealing shared experiences among coworkers.

Both Wendte and Francis agreed that listening is key to understanding and addressing employee needs. Demonstrating genuine engagement and support can transform not only the workforce but the organization itself.

Wendte and Francis were joined on the panel by Kate Ridley, chief brand officer, Stanley 1913; Tanvi Patel, vice president and general manager, Amazon Pharmacy, Amazon.com; and moderator Melissa Shaw, CEO and co-founder, Shaw/Scott.
