Welcome to our newest feature, “A Minute With …,” where we ask our illustrious board members a few general questions about work and life. This week we chatted with Kecia Hielscher, vice president of brands, Home at HauteLook | Nordstrom Rack.

Inner Circle: What are some of the leadership lessons you’ve learned during the course of your career?
Kecia Hielscher: Management is “doing” and leadership is “being” — being there for your team, being trusted, having integrity, being honest and having the hard talks when needed to make the team/business stronger. Another leadership lesson I live by is “FEAR = Face Everything and Rise – or Run?” I ask this of the team when a new project arrives, and reflect on that personally as well.

IC: What’s your hiring and talent acquisition strategy?
KH: I hire “great” people and take time to find the perfect fit who has passion and personality. Also, I believe in the idea that one great hire equals three good hires, so “great” is always the goal.

IC: What career advice can you give to our members?
KH: Do what you love. You work way too many hours not to love what you do every day. Also, work for great brands and great people, and be passionate about what you do.

IC:
Is there a book, blog, podcast, etc., that you turn to for inspiration?
KH: As for books, the following have been very inspirational to me: “Thrive” by Arianna Huffington; “Lean In” by Sheryl Sandberg; and “The Woman I Wanted to Be” by Diane Von Furstenberg. As for podcasts, I turn to the TED Radio Hour. Trade publications also offer great inspiration and knowledge about our industry.

IC: What are your hobbies?
KH: Running, KaiaFIT, reading and playing with my boys.

IC: What’s your favorite vacation spot?
KH: Cross between Lake Tahoe, Maui and Neskowin, Oregon.
