It’s peak holiday season, and for employees in the retail industry it might feel like there’s no end in sight. We know by now how real burnout is, so what are the strategies retail leaders can use to confront and destroy that burnout? These five Women in Retail Leadership Circle members are finding ways to motivate their teams and keep morale up even in the most stressful of times.
1. Lori Rickard, Director, Workload Planning and Communications, Cinemark
“Celebrate wins — no matter how big or small.”
2. Revae Embs, Human Resources Director, The Fresh Market
“We have a lot of fun and don’t take things too seriously. I try to be really open and honest with my team and always encourage them to ‘take what they need.’ They have the flexibility to do what they need to do. I think that really helps to keep everyone motivated.”
3. Jessica Schoppee, Vice President, E-Commerce, Health E-Commerce
“One of the biggest things is to lead by example. If I’m positive, it’s bringing that excitement to the rest of the team. The other piece is letting them know to assume positive intent. When you do that, it’s easier to motivate your team because everything comes through in a different tone.”
4. Sam Baker, A/B Testing and CRO Consultant
“Lots of coffee! But also new opportunities to thrive.”
5. Brieane Olson, President, PacSun
“Strive for authenticity. Allow yourself to be vulnerable in your leadership role and empower your teams.”
