In this episode of Around the Circle, Kristina and Ashley talk about how women can raise their salaries and rise into leadership positions at work. Back in December, we published an article in our Inner Circle e-newsletter and on Women in Retail Leadership Circle’s website titled, “Pay Inequality: How to Make More Money and Reach Higher Levels,” written by Karen Cho, vice president, corporate human resources at Designer Brands. In the article, Cho shared three impactful things women can do to ensure they receive the raises and leadership roles they deserve:

  1. Ask for the job. One reason women don’t rise to the same levels as men is that they don’t apply for the big jobs as often. Research shows that women will not apply to a job if they only have three out of five requirements, while men with the same skills will look at that list of requirements and go for it. Therefore, if you see a job you want, apply!
  2. Find out what it takes. If you don’t get the job or you want to be promoted, ask what it would take for you to get that job or promotion. This forces leaders to really consider, and articulate to you, how you can improve.
  3. Get networked. Internal and external networking is key. Find advocates and get to know influential people in your organization at all levels. Let people know you’re looking for a new challenge. Update your LinkedIn profile, and when you get an offer outside your current company, talk about your salary expectation.

There are so many great nuggets of advice here! We hope these fantastic tips help you in your career. We encourage you to try them out and see where they take you. You can read Karen Cho’s full article by clicking here.
