“The first question I ask when someone’s struggling and they’re a reluctant leader is, ‘Is it will or skill-related?'” Liz Allison, CEO of Tricoci luxury salons and spas, shared how she approaches a reluctant leader on her team during a panel conversation at the recent Women in Retail On the Road: Chicago event. If the employee is struggling with certain skills, she says, “giving them the feedback to be better on certain things, as long as it is concrete and actionable, is the way to go” to help them embrace leadership.

Joining Allison on the panel were Monica Royer, founder and CEO, Monica + Andy; Lauri Joffe Turjeman, chief marketing officer, American Freight; Judy Ransford, CEO, Hickory Farms; and moderator Reina vanDelft, CEO and founder, RVD Solutions.

“As leaders, we might not be lending voice to everybody that’s in the room, and the opportunity to have them use their voice can sometimes bring out that leadership that’s tucked away,” added Royer.
