When working for the same company or even in the same industry for many years, it’s not uncommon to get bored with your work. At our Women in Retail Leadership Circle On the Road | San Francisco event, Diana Kapp, journalist and author of “Girls Who Run the World,” moderated a panel on leadership with leading women retail executives. Kapp asked panelist Leigh Rawdon, CEO and co-founder of children’s clothing company Tea Collection, how she stays excited having worked at the same company for almost 20 years.
Rawdon admitted that recently she confided in a close friend that she didn’t want to wake up one day and be 50 years old still doing the same thing, but her friend didn’t understand why. “She looked at me and was like, […] ‘You own your own company,’” Rawdon said. “‘You’re growing. You stand for travel and kids, and it’s creative, why would you change?’” The conversation made Rawdon think hard. “Because I’m suppose to change,” she said. “Because I’m an achiever and I have to keep climbing.” Rawdon realized in this defining moment that she actually really loves the work she does and she’s still excited all the time, and isn’t that all that really matters?
Rawdon said she stays excited because retail is changing all the time.
“The people [change], people are always interesting,” she said. “The technology changes, the retail landscape changes. In my case, I’m selling to moms — that whole landscape has changed so much. How mom’s shop and what their influences are has changed so much. So, that keeps the puzzles and the wheels turning so much that I never feel bored […]. I think I will wake up some day when I’m 50 years old and be very happy with where I am.”
