Let’s face it: We live in a world full of choices and unlimited amounts of information available to us when making decisions. Whether it be a job change, a relationship conundrum or a health decision, sometimes talking these issues through is the best way to sift through the data and consider all the possible outcomes, with pros and cons.

This is why everyone needs a personal board of advisors. This board should act as a sounding board to provide you with feedback on life decisions, opportunities and challenges. It should offer you unfiltered feedback that you can’t necessarily get from colleagues or friends.

“Every single one of us should have our own board of advisors,” said Danielle Beauparlant Moser, co-founder and managing partner of BLT Careers, at the Women in Retail Leadership Circle’s On the Road event in San Francisco earlier this year. “I’m guessing that most of you probably have one in some form or another. They’re strong women. Maybe they’re colleagues from work … with whom we can share our concerns, who will give us honest feedback. Not just people who will be our cheerleaders, but people who will give us the cold, hard truth. Oh, and by the way, you have to hear them.”

Moser discussed how a board of advisors is very important to executives who are building their personal brands. After all, whether they’re looking to get a promotion, grow in their current position, reinvent themselves, discover their “second act,” or pursue entrepreneurial options, they’ll need focus and a compelling pitch — i.e., a personal brand. And what better way to get the feedback they need for this exercise than from a group of honest women who will “tell it like it is.”
