Holly Briedis, executive vice president and chief digital officer of Fossil Group, has a few non-negotiables when it comes to being a working parent.

The mother of a five-year-old and a three-year-old, Briedis said in an interview with CommerceNext Co-Founder Veronika Sonsev at Shoptalk that she always leads authentically, bringing 100 percent of her personality to the office. For Briedis, that includes her boundaries around parenting.

Briedis started out as a consultant, working for top-tier companies like McKinsey & Company and Mercer Management Consulting. She then pivoted over to Fossil — a former consulting client of hers — and now leads marketing and digital there.

“What I started at McKinsey and what I’ve continued at Fossil — I do not compromise this — is I have two hours in the morning and two hours for dinner and bedtime, and I will not take calls, I will not pick up my laptop — I don’t even have my phone on me most times — and I set that expectation really directly,” she said. “For me, that really helps me be a better mom. Knowing when I’m going to be on with my kids.”

“When I’m at work, I’m at work, and when I’m being a mom, I’m being a mom,” she said, adding she’s the kind of person that needs that divide in her head.

“Knowing that I have the time carved out and that something’s not going to sneak into it because people know what my boundaries are has been the single best thing I think I’ve done as a mom,” she said.

Briedis also relocates her family to a different country for six to eight weeks every year — something she said she had to get leadership buy-in from.

“We’re on year three of this, so jury is still out as to how well it’s working and if it will have any impact over time,” Briedis said, laughing. “I really want my kids to grow up and feel like they are global citizens and have the perspective of what it means to experience different cultures and languages and discomfort.”
