I’m writing this right before I leave for my bucket list trip to Cuba! A friend and I decided to stop talking about and just do it, and, after several months of planning, it’s actually happening! I’m so excited to see what adventures lie ahead, and I promise to share stories and pictures with you when I’m back.
We have a great issue of Inner Circle for you this week, including a continuation of our coverage from the National Retail Federation’s Big Show, which took place in New York City last week. For starters, we have a podcast episode with Amanda Hesser, co-founder and CEO of Food52, an online community for gourmands and cooks that’s comprised of an app, a line of cookbooks, an e-commerce site, and more. During our discussion, Amanda discussed her company and what makes it unique, leadership best practices, and her favorite quote.
We also have a podcast episode with Lisa Gavales, president and CEO of Things Remembered (and a WIRLC board member). Lisa discusses what innovation means for Things Remembered, how testing influences the company’s product selection — both in-store and online — and her thoughts on what trends and technologies will have the biggest impact on the retail industry in 2017.
Also, be sure to check out our video recorded from the “purple carpet” at the NRF Foundation Gala 2017, where we snagged interviews with women retail leaders named to the NRF Foundation’s List of People Shaping Retail’s Future, including Stefanie Botelho, founder and CEO of Fitzroy Toys; Christine Hunsicker, founder and CEO of Gwynnie Bee; and Drew Ann Long, founder of Caroline’s Cart.
We also have an enlightening infographic and article from Storagepipe Solutions about Grace Hopper, the “Queen of Software” who helped invent the A-0 system, the first compiler that transformed complex source code to binary code, and COBOL, a primary programming language for business applications. Without these two developments, the programming language we use today wouldn’t exist. We thought it was important to pay some homage to women scientists!
And finally, don’t forget to register for the Women in Retail Leadership Summit, an intimate conference for the true women leaders in the retail space taking place April 26-28 at the fabulous Four Seasons in Miami. We’d love to have you join us! Register here. And just so you know, a two-night stay at the four-star Four Seasons Hotel is included in your registration. But rooms are going fast, so register now!
