In this episode of Women in Retail Talks, Women in Retail Leadership Circle Senior Content Strategist Ashley Chiaradio interviews Elienne Anoriscat, founder and creative director of The Love of Retro (TLR), a jewelry brand that repurposes CDs into a wearable experience. Listen in as Anoriscat discusses how she came up with the idea to start the brand, her focus on sustainability, and the design process behind each unique piece. She shares her biggest challenges when starting and growing TLR, the brand’s partnership with fashion designer and former “Project Runway” contestant Kelly Dempsey, and how TLR’s jewelry has been discovered and worn by celebrities, specifically in the music and entertainment industries.
Anoriscat explains TLR’s customer acquisition efforts; its social media strategy, which emphasizes user-generated content and influencers; and why environmental sustainability is so important to her and the company. Lastly, she shares advice to other women looking to launch their own businesses, why it’s important to be open to finding a mentor, and her future goals for TLR.
A South Florida native, Elienne Anoriscat has always had a distinct taste for bold fashion and accessories. A proud graduate of Howard University School of Law, her time in Washington, D.C. lead her to managing child programs for D.C. public schools prior to starting her legal career. In 2013, she joined Direct Holdings Global as the associate general counsel. Maintaining her love for fashion, in 2015 Anoriscat started her own styling company catering to professional women.
In 2018, the opportunity arose for Anoriscat to merge her two passions: her love for law and her love for fashion. TLR was born out of her desire to make sustainable fashion luxurious along with repurposing obsolete inventory. As founder and creative director, Anoriscat believes there’s no such thing as being overdressed. Her greatest source of inspiration is life. There’s a little beauty everywhere and in everyone; even in things that are considered useless or trash, there’s always a way to make beauty out of the ashes.
